The Students will be looking for their eleventh straight win and to retain the “Uni Cup” when they meet traditional foes UNSW/ES at No 1 Oval today.
The Cup is played for once each year, alternating between hosts.
Last year Sydney University won it for the first time after a dour battle in the wet at the Village Green. UNSWES won it the previous year in the corresponding match at Oval No 1.
The cup was struck in 2008 by long time supporters of both clubs - Mark Stewart and Peter Hunt who run Kensington Physiotherapy and Sports Clinic.
"Mixta" is a former Sydney Uni senior captain and coach and both he and Peter have supported the club for many years in personal capacities whilst their business looks after the Bulldogs injury management.
Bragging rights as per usual are on the line.
After recent wins against the best in the competition, Egan and co have their sights set firmly on the minor premiership and beyond. That is all weeks away though and the business at hand is dispatching the Bulldogs who have shown improved form in recent weeks. With their best side in and given a sniff they will be more than competitive.
Last week Pennant Hills were clearly depleted across all grades and the Students were comfortable winners in four matches.Features were Egan’s continuous hard leads and aerial work in the forward line, Alex Lee breaking the lines at will, Jack Lawson having the ball on a string and dominating across half back particularly in the third quarter and the team efforts allround that have been a hall-mark of this team all year. The Reserves were challenged for three quarters before finding their groove and the Blues and Colts built steady margins across their matches, easily outclassing their opponents in solid four quarter efforts.
The Golds and Reds found the going a bit tougher. The Reds after an early onslaught managed to come out almost even in the second half against top of the Div 3 table Moorebank Sports. Mac Uni Kookas were well drilled and showed plenty of run from the backline which was too much for the Golds who despite their inexperience match most opponent’s effort and attack on the footy. The skills and knowledge will come and I think we’ll see more of the likes of Fysh, Dash and Lachie Abbott amongst others in the higher grades over the next couple of years.
